As a special industrial version of ECC82/12AU7, the 5814WA tubes are highly sought after for their reliability (manufactured to military specs), low noise and outstanding performance, and the CBS/Hytron production of 5814WA is considered one of the best American tubes ever produced. Several variants were made in the short production cycle (1953 – 1963), and the late 1950s’ black plates square getter version is clearly the winner for its absolute rarity and excellent tonal qualities – smooth top to bottom extension, dynamic presentation, wide sound stage and the famed American lush sound with clarity rarely found on any of its successors.
